Next week I take the silver jet west to get to the East. This will be my second trip to Japan & I enjoyed the first one very much. Too bad this blog was not running back then because I recommend anyone who is into International Kitsch to go see a festival in Japan – the Tenjin Matsuri being one of the top ones according to people who know such things.
But July is Matsuri season in Japan, so this time I am hiring a travel guide to show me around Tokyo & Kyoto and I will see the things I missed last time, but the real highlights come after that week.
First, I head south to stay in a ryokan or traditional Japanese inn in Kurashiki. They pride themselves on taking very personal care of their guests from feeding you in your room to rolling out a futon mattress for your sleep.
This stay is followed up by moving on to a floating ryokan on Guntû Cruises. This luxury cruise ship only has 19 suites and is compared more favorably with a minimalist ryokan. I am very excited about this.
Japanese Art in the Inland Sea
After that, I stay in the area of Japan’s inland sea to take ferries out to the islands (that I didn’t stop at on my cruise), to take in the Setouchi Triennale 2019. This art festival will change every season for the rest of the year and will have just opened up when I get there.
Now the A-Bombs…
Following that (well, now really, it’s all downhill from here), I head to Hiroshima for the re-opening of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which has just been through an 8 year renovation. It reopens on 25 April, so I will be one of the first to get to see that.
Heading Out West…
I have a couple more days there before I jump back on the Shinkansen bullet train and head to Kanazawa, land of the samurai. That will allow me to soak up some of Japan away from the megalopolis of Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka. And perhaps just relax and absorb the previous 2 weeks.
I don’t want to fill up your inboxes needlessly, so I will not email an update for every post while I’m on the road. Check back here every couple of days or when you do come, look for more posts than the one you came for. I wouldn’t want you to miss out on ANY of my witticisms and insightful analysis. 🤮
Oh… or the pictures. Yes, the pictures.
