A relatively minor trip to me in many ways, but I had been wanting to visit Great Britain on my own terms & get away from the urban areas. Then the NY Times published an article on castles in the UK that had remade themselves into hotels. How do you pass that up?
So, I made reservations during what appeared to be a busy holiday season for the hotels & left the trains up to the powers that be. It all worked out. Britain has a robust rail system & often there are more ways to get somewhere. Also, if there isn’t another train will come along in about an hour.
Another bonus is that if you have a Britrail pass, you can board any train & get a seat. I found that a number of trains were delayed or canceled, but there were plenty of alternate routes or other trains shortly. And it really doesn’t take more than 4 hours to get anywhere in Great Britain.
Also, you’ll see pictures of the Fingal which was a lighthouse tender ship, but not is converted into a hotel & sits in Edinburgh harbor.
This is going to be my year for castles because my next trip is a tour by private train of Transylvania. Best of all, I’ll be there for Halloween. If I come back as a member of the Undead, tell Mama I loved her!!!
This is my favorite trip of yours. I was so excited when you used the castle emoji! And, I want to go to Transylvania for Halloween with you. But, sadly, I’m not free.
From a distance, that flag with the lighthouse looks decidedly dodgy.
Why I took that picture.
