Well, besides my sense of humor. For those of you who flunked 8th grade Geography – that’s the Atacama Desert in north Chile. This was a trip hosted by Smithsonian Journeys which meant we had an expert from the National Air & Space Museum – an expert not only in astronomy, but also in geology. Why? Because not only can you see the skies very clearly from the Atacama, but you also have a lot of volcanic activity under your feet.
As usual, the trip attracted very intelligent people with whom I could play the buffoon. I had a good time & learned a lot. My pictures of the Milky Way did not turn out as well as I wanted, but I know what needs to be done to improve them. Next summer, I’ll try again.
